London wetland centre-9th June 2013

Hi all,

About three weeks ago, I went to the London wetland centre with my friend Josh. Despite there not being many rare things to see, we got some great shots. My aim was to focus on photographing people and nature, as well as the more common species. This included grey herons, moorhens and little grebes(not so common in a lot of places but fairly common here).

The first species on that list that we encountered was the grey heron. We were in a good position as we could photograph the heron against a clean background or a background with people in. I experimented  and came out with this. I got some shots of the herons head turned towards me but I thought this worked better as it showed the acknowledgement of the heron of the photographers presence.

Next were the moorhens which were probably the highlight of the day. Chicks were wandering around with their mothers and were a complete delight to watch and photograph. They came within about a metre of me. At that point they were too close to photograph but just watching them was nice.

I also managed to get a shot of my friend Josh photographing an adult moorhen.

Next up were the little grebes. While crossing a bridge, we stopped to look at what seemed to be a stranded grebe chick. We watched for a while until POP! The adult came up right in front of us and fed the chick some kind of larvae. The adult repeated this many times while we were there.

First post!-Macro mania

Welcome to my brand new blog everyone! Here I will share with you all my latest photographic adventures, photographs and news.

As one of my projects over the summer, I have decided to try out some super macro photography. This has involved reversing my 18-55mm kit lens and adding an extension tube for maximum magnification. I'm trying to find less common species or less familiar species to photograph so my photos don't just look like any old photo. This project started about month ago but I plan on getting most of my shots over the holidays.

This was one of my first images of the project. It is of some kind of beetle that I found sheltered on the underside of a leaf. To make it easier to photograph, I carefully clipped the leaf and laid it on the garden table. After taking a few photographs, I took the beetle back to the bush it came from and put it roughly in the same place.

The next photo was taken a week later. I found this particular insect on a blooming Rhododendron petal. I set up my tripod next to the flower and waited for the insect to come into position for photographing.

I also managed to photograph a green shield bug.
